Video as viewed on a TV is an interlaced medium - you
will get the best results (sharpest image with motion)
with "normal" mode; if your primary use for the camcorder
is for taking stills (unwise, since resolution is too low
for most uses...), best results (least artifacting on
moving edges) will come with progressive scan; with
computer-only viewing of motion video, it is a toss-up,
depending if you will use full resolution with this
non-interlaced medium (use PS), or will use less, in
which case throwing out half the scan lines converts
the video to PS anyway (so either mode would look the
same...). Personally, I think PS-mode, digital effects,
still-capability, etc. on video cameras is a bunch of
hooey - I would prefer lower price and the best possible
implementation of basic video functions.
