Odd - it is really essential for clean film processing. It is glycerin
that, when added in a very small quantity to distilled water, makes a
good final rinse (after the wash) to cut surface tension on water so
it doesn't "bead" and dry leaving residue spots on the film. There
are two essential chemicals (developer and fixer), and three "convenience"
chemicals (short-stop, clearing-agent, and photo-flo) - water can be
substituted for these last three, but it is hard to get spot-free
processed film without the last...
