I haven't read the book, but I have used a heck of a lot of Nikkor lenses (see "SUBJECTIVE Lens Evaluations (Mostly Nikkors)" at:

My conclusion: of the very large number of Nikkors I have used
(often multiple samples of individual lenses), VERY few were dogs.
That is something that I think cannot be said about any other
extensive lens line. There has been remarkably consistent high quality in both the design and manufacture (sturdiness and sample-to-sample uniformity) of Nikkor lenses over a long period of time. In the Nikkor
line (at least until very recently), price has not been an indicator of optical quality - virtually all of the Nikkor lenses made in the last
30 years or so have been excellent.
