You may find this Nikkor list (with
evaluations) useful, at:

(the low-end "G" lenses are not
evaluated - most are not up to Nikon's
old high standards, though the ones
that sell for more than about $300
likely are...). Otherwise, the
designations are unlikely to offer
a good guide to quality (though most
of the "ED" lenses are quite good...).
