Unless the lens is well stopped down (where it would
show edge-darkening), the low DOF at wide stops would
probably not affect illumination, but would affect effective lens
speed (the lens would be slower with the smaller filter
on - especially with the 67mm one...).

I have not tried this, but if the shoe on the camera is
standard size, and the Nikon flash is used in A or M modes,
it should be OK, especially if you make a small insert to
fit between the flash foot and camera shoe that has a hole
in it permitting contact only with the "switching" contact
in the center of the shoe...
