I have tried a few 5-element 28mm f2.8 E's and found them dreadful,
except for one at smaller apertures - one of Nikon's VERY few dogs.
The 28mm f2.8 AF is the same, though the "D" version has added an
element (probably for CRC + general image improvement), so it may be
better. The 8-element AIS 28mm f2.8 (not the AI version), though, is
one of the great 28mm's, being sharp and contrasty throughout, at all
focus distances, even over most of the frame wide open. There is very
little sample variation.
>What about the 28mm/2 AI & AIS ?
These are excellent by f5.6, but there is some sample variation, with
some being quite good by f2.8, and a few not great until about f5.6.
Hope This Helps
