I suspect that the gain was already up some before switching in the
filter (which would therefore be undesireable...). Switching in the
filter would then raise the gain more, making the color saturation
and grain level appear different. If the aperture-priority mode is
selected, the f-stop can be specified (for DOF or lens-optimization
reasons), and the ND filter can be used to keep the shutter speed
down if desired.
