I have not observed any of the above ("S" or FireWire
connections, high-quality gear, no-dropouts as
conditions...). If you have, you are likely using
composite RCA connectors for video, low-quality
codecs or viewing gear, and are experiencing dropouts.
These are not intrinsic faults of the Mini-DV medium...
