You can find mini-reviews and frame-grabs (same 5 different
conditions, for comparison) from these and some other
MINI-DV camcorders (and a Beta SP for fun...;-) on my web
page, under "I babble". In my not-so-humble opinion, I
would prefer a more manoeverable camcorder for what you want
to do than the XL-1 (and it is awkward/expensive to add
converters to the big lens [frame-grabs using the Century
converters are with the XL-1 review]). The VX-1000 is
smaller, and has some interesting picture controls; the
TRV-900 is smaller yet, as are the GL-1 and EZ30U - all
are useable, though each camcoorder has its own drawbacks,
alas... BTW, the PC-1 is small enough to tape to boards, hats,
etc., and in good light, the image is surprisingly
good for a one-chipper...
