This is not always true...
The 55mm f2.8 Nikkor, while excellent as a macro lens, is
even better near infinity-focus. The same is true of the
MF 105mm f2.8 Micro-Nikkor. One of two 200mm f4 MF
Micro-Nikkors I had was also better near infinity than
near minimum-focus. The 60mm AF Nikkor is definitely
better as a macro lens, though, unless well stopped
down. The AF 105 is about equal at both ends of the
focus range. I would not make assumptions without
actual experience - sometimes there are surprises...;-)
