The TRV-900s appear to vary in how much mechanical noise
is transmitted through the case to the shoe (some also
"hum" with the MKE-300 with tape loaded, in record-mode).
For a "cheap" short shotgun, I don't know of a better mic
that is still available (hey, Sony, I want the ECM-Z157s
made again...!). It is hard to isolate the mic physically
from the case, but I suspect that is what you need to do...
If you handle the rig carefully to avoid handling noises,
putting the mic on a still-camera flash bracket attached
to the camera can work...
