The Sony controller is pretty basic, but a good deal for the
money. Lanc is a control protocol shared by Sony and Canon
(there is a Lanc socket on all Sony cameras I know of). The
Canon ZR1000(?) remote offers selectable speeds and a
(poor) variable-speed rocker, for about $180; the Varizoom
models are more expensive, but offer more/better controls.
None offers a really smooth start/stop for zooming that I
know of. For remote-control (off-tripod control) zooming,
I prefer the Canon for its selectable speeds ("mash"
the rocker, and the camera zooms immediately, and only at
the selected speed - without the "wobble" look of a varying
zoom speed during the zooming).
