Unfortunately, I just did have a problem...
Shooting a 6-camera coverage of a wedding ceremony of
unknown duration, I used a used TRV900 I had had problems
with while shooting in LP-mode for playback in other gear,
but it had played back LP-mode tape itself OK - BUT, when
trying to play back the LP-mode tape shot at the wedding,
the picture was OK, but the sound track was full of "beeps"
and dropouts even when played in the camera it was shot
with. I copied the tape to the computer using three
different camcorders to recover the sound track by splicing
across the three copies, hoping the dropouts were random.
Unfortunately, they weren't - but the severity of the
effect varied, and I was able to recover a decent track
with splicing and filtering.
Why do lessons have to be such a pain!? ;-)
You are right, though, that this is rarely a problem - and
I will be shooting again today in LP-mode (but NOT with
that troublesome camera...!!!).
