Ummmm...., sigh.....! ;-)
I generally avoid using Mini-DV LP-mode unless
there is a pressing need, as there was last
Saturday, videoing a long (but low-budget)
talk, with two cameras. I decided, since I
had four tapes that had been used (in LP-mode),
and I could stand dropouts if necessary, that
I would reuse these, again recording in LP-mode.
All went well, with no dropouts on the four
tapes, and there were no problems loading the
footage I needed from them into my computer,
using Raptor Video. All was well until the
footage was placed on the timeline in Premiere
5.1a, and, THEN.....!!!! Crash! Crash! Crash!
This was with an ordinarily VERY stable system,
but I saw modes of crashing I never knew existed!
Every couple of moves in Premiere, CRASH!
There were no particular moves that triggered
it, or didn't. Crashing was totally random, and
often, whether or not I had just saved the
project. Results were "blue screen", "this
program has performed...", cursor locking,
"previewing" not working, right screen
freezing in Premiere but left screen
returning to the desktop ("Ctr-Alt-Del"
non-functional with this...). Gingerly, I
tried other projects that were on the computer,
and fortunately, those were stable (WHEW!!!;-).
Only cold rebooting allowed me enough time in
Premiere to do what I was sure I needed to do:
force all the clips to rerender (by applying
filters), then save them as new files and throw
out the originals. After a few miserable hours,
this was done, and was successful........
Lesson (at least until I figure out what
exactly went wrong...): NEVER record in
LP-mode over tape already recorded in LP-mode!
Learning can be painful....;-)
