Ah, but that "chunk of frosted glass" is the fastest and easiest way
to focus! (IF you can see it sharply - if not, you may need to adjust your glasses prescription.) I take those "focus assist"-marred screens
out of bodies when I buy them, and replace them with the plain-center
ones so that I can use the center of the screen for focusing, without
having to deal with indecisively shattered micro-prism images, or split
images that are often dark on one side unless carefully centered, and
for which I must hunt for an appropriate subject part (which is rarely in exactly the desired focus plane) that has a line somewhere........
(or which is not accurate with some lenses I have, and unusable with others). If you actually do prefer to deal with the dastardly things,
it is almost certainly possible to adapt a "K" screen intended to fit
another Nikon by using a long file to reduce the size of a screen that
is too large. To keep those miserable "focusing aids" centered in the
screen, remove material from oposite sides when narrowing a dimension.
I have adapted "K" screens for the FM-2, FE-2 for use in N2020, for those who insisted on removing one of the advantages of AF bodies
over MF bodies: they come WITH a good screen - you don't have to buy it extra!
Hope this helps.
