The FE, FM, Nikkormat Ft3, EL-2, F2A, and F2AS
will also accept non-AI lenses, in addition to
the F3 and F4 - the AI tabs on these can be raised
out of the way before the non-AI lens is mounted
(stop-down metering is used). Non-AI lenses can
be cheaply "AI'd", also. The 21mm f4 Nikkor would
fit only the Nikon F and F2, several early
fisheyes would only fit mirror-lock bodies, and
a few late "el cheapo" AF lenses are without
aperture rings (making thenm useless on most
bodies), but, with a few caveats, the original
poster was essentially right...;-)
