Well, it's basically all in the above..., except that there is no
label on the camera for the "n"... (it may be in the serial number).

"MAY" sync at 1/250th - some do, others may not...

Um, not correct - many Nikons have 1/80th or 1/90th sync speeds...

It is for metering normally for available light, to which a flash
exposure can be added ("fill-flash", usually underexposed so as not
to be obvious, but just to lighten shadows slightly). The higher sync
speed allows higher light levels or faster film to be used with flash
and available light combined.
