You can get a copy of the instruction manual from Nikon
by calling 1-800-NIKONUS. If the flash shoe has four
pin contacts instead of two, it is an FG, and it has
TTL flash. If it does have the four contacts, I would
not use any flash with this camera that does not also
have the four contacts, since chances are good that
the flash would switch at high voltage which could
eventually damage the camera. If an FG, it would also
have A and P modes - P mode requires setting the lens
to minimum stop (largest number). M90 and "B" are
non-quartz-timed speeds (and the M90 is also the
highest flash synch speed) and are good speeds to use
to check if a lock-up is caused by battery failure
(if all works well [except the meter] with these speeds,
change the battery to get back operation at the other
speeds). The button on the front is a 2-stop back-light
compensator for use when you are in A and P modes. The
FG metering pattern is center-weighted, probably the
best choice for most purposes. BTW, the camera will
not meter until you have advanced to frame number one...
Have fun with it - the FG is a neat little camera!
