"Good" ol' Adobe Premiere (with Canopus Raptor) is in
many ways a pain in the neck, but it is still an excellent
video editor. BTW, I'd heard about the great speed of a
G-4 with FPC, so I asked a *dual*-processor 450MHz G-4/FCP
owner about 10-second cross-fade (dissolve) render times.
Guess what? My single-processor P-III 800MHz (this CPU is
under $250 these days...) with Premiere 5.1 and the Raptor
CODEC renders a 10-second dissolve in the same 30
seconds...;-) I have not tried 10-generation renders with
the Apple DV-CODEC (I've heard of problems - solved yet?),
but the Raptor CODEC does pretty well (results are on my
web page, listed under the "I babble" index). I prefer
the more intuitive working of Premiere (when the dual
windows are made single with full-resolution, and
operations are carried out directly on the timeline,
with film-strip view used). There are other editors that
people favor (each has its advantages and disadvantages),
like Ulead's Media Studio Pro, and EditDV.
