The F3 auto mode should work with tab-up stop-down metering - just hold in
the DOF button during the exposure (I think ;-). BTW, the newer versions
of the 28mm f3.5 (+ the 28mm f2.8 AIS and all versions of the 28mm f2) and 50mm f1.4 (+ all other newer 50mm's) Nikkors are considerably improved optically over the older versions, especially in wide-aperture illumination
evenness and edge/corner sharpness, and somewhat in contrast. If you do want
to proceed with AI'ing (which may not be cost effective, given the used value
of your lenses), this person does a nice job:
