There is nothing wrong with turning off the F3 motor, and hand winding
the camera with the motor still attached. Film fog may occur if the
rewind cover is missing (try taping a coin in place of the cover).
BTW, have you checked the slot just inside the motor battery compartment
to see if the cover is there (it is trapped in the slot by a spring-loaded catch)? The counter not working is a moderate annoyance - probably smaller
than paying the bill to have it repaired...;-)
