There were maybe four Nikon TTL flashes for the F3: the
SB-12,17,16A, and possibly a handle-mount...
TTL fill-ratio work CAN be done with the F3 (limited by the
1/60th top metered sync speed, and 400-ASA top base film
speed...) using the AS-7 or the TTL remote cord. Set the ASA
normally on the body, but higher by the fill-ratio wanted
on the shoe on the AS-7 or cord. Covering the middle of the
three contacts on the shoe prevents the flash from turning
off the F3 ambient-light meter (BUT, it also doesn't prevent
above-sync shutter speeds from being selected, and doesn't
provide the flash ready-light in the finder...). The SB-28
(and other ISO-shoed flashes) can be used on the F3 in auto
mode using various adapters, or just a PC sync cord, and
fill-ratios are easy to work out in this mode.
