The F3 TTL system is a good one, but with some limitations, alas
(slow max sync speed, ASA limited to 400...) - and it is compatible
with no other... The Vivitar adapter allowed use of particular
Vivitar flashes that permitted meaningful changing of ASA speed on
the flash itself - a unique and very useful ability (it could be used to
set TTL fill-ratios - I'm still kicking myself for not grabbing some of
those flashes...;-). I would consider using one of the Nikon SB-24/5/6/7
series as an auto flash on the F3 (they have a wide range of useable "A"
f-stop settings), or looking for the compact and reasonably inexpensive
(used) SB-12 or SB-17 F3-dedicated flashes... (and if you add an AS-7
shoe, or SC-14 remote cord, you can set TTL fill ratios with these or
the SB-16 flashes...).
Hope This Helps
