Now, if only Nikon would introduce an F3A, with an 8008 shutter and
TTL flash system, there would be the perfect camera (for some of us!)!
Unfortunately, good as the F3 is for a lot of things, flash isn't one
of them (though an SB17/16/12 and AS-7 [or the remote cord] will do
TTL fill flash - though only up to about 200 ASA, and with 1/60th
max sync speed, alas). The SB23/4/5/6/7, and others can be adapted
with various shoes or sync cords and brackets, but TTL is out.
"Auto" mode is still quite useful for most things other than
macro and tele flash work, and fill ratios can be established,
but the process is limited by the slow sync speed, and is more
awkward than TTL fill with the 8008. I would suggest doing what
I do: use the F3 when framing precision, PC lens metering, and
mirror lock-up are useful; use the 8008 when TTL flash and
compact motor drive are useful.
Hope This Helps
