The Nikon E-Series lenses were introduced to offer a lower-priced
alternative to the metal-barreled Nikkors of the time (though the
E zooms had mostly metal in their barrels). Optics ranged from
so-so to superb (mostly excellent). At the time they were offered,
they looked/felt distinctly terrible compared with the regular-line
Nikkors - but compared with current AF lenses, they now seem like
paragons of high-quality construction...;-) These are generally
bargain lenses, since they are often sold used at relatively low
prices. BTW, these (and most other Nikkors) are listed in my
Nikkor evaluation list on my web page, under "I babble".
