Umm, I close down a stop more from the smaller of the two stops recommended by the DOF scale for the near and infinity distances,
after fudging the lens focus a bit toward infinity. I do not
choose the "balanced" hyperfocal distance which would render
circles of confusion of out of focus points of near-infinity
and near-minimum-distance objects the same size (but which
renders images of the near-infinity subjects softer-looking
than the technically equally soft nearest subjects). The amount
of "fudge" depends on how important it is to have infinity-subjects sharp vs. the sharp apertures available, and the character of the
near subject material (sillouettes can stand much more softening
than sand, for instance, without looking unsharp).
