This seems unlikely - D-8 tape is Hi-8 tape, and that medium
is declining (and the prices have never been much lower,
even in the hey-day of Hi-8); Mini-DV tape prices have
fallen to 1/3rd of their original price, and are now about
the same per unit recorded time as Hi-8 tapes used for
D-8 recording...
