These lenses (at least the Schneider Componon-S and Comparon - the older
Componon wasn't quite as good, I think...) are both first-rate. The Comparon
is often seen at bargain prices since people aren't familiar with it, and it is
often mistaken for the inferior Componar. The Comparon is intended for
use near 1/4X magnification, the Componon-S for lower magnification
(larger print sizes). The Comparon, being a 4-element Tessar-type, is
brilliant, but has less coverage than the 6-element Componons do - not
a very important consideration in enlarging, since the Comparons will more
than cover their normal format film sizes. I prefer using Comparons (cheap,
and sometimes faster than the Componons in the same FL's) and find them
brilliant and sharp to the corners even wide open.
