I'm not familiar with the Canon one-chippers - but the
Sony Mini-DV ***imaging*** types are compared in
various lighting conditions at:

Some of the one-chippers are amazingly sharp - though
this is not an unmixed blessing...;-)
BTW, all the current Sony Mini-DV models support
analogue pass-through...
