The Sony VX-2000 picture can be modified to taste using the
custom controls... I nudge the sharpness up a notch, the
color bias a couple of notches toward warmth, and the
AE-bias a couple of notches down - for a darker, richer,
and even sharper picture... The picture then is very
noticeably sharper than the Canon pictures, but it is
also without the annoying bright "edge-effect" that the
pictures from both Canon camcorders show (from inherent
over-sharpening). I also found the lens controls of
the XL-1 insufferable, and the AE and AF marginal
(you gathered correctly that I did not like the
Canons...;-). The (critical) camcorder review site is at:
www.David-Ruether-Photography.com/camcorder-comparison.htm
(BTW, the video-producer who kindly provided the XL-1s
and GL-1 for the review immediately returned the XL-1
[two tried...] in exchange for the JVC DV500, and is
now selling the two GL-1s, to replace them with a
VX-2000. Maybe next time Canon will get it right....;-)
