This is unfortunate (an understatement!).
I have been scammed twice by people advertising in Shutterbug ads.
For those thinking it is easy to get away with what seems like a
simple scam, be forwarned that one of those scammers was caught
several years later, and is now sending me (and many others) small
checks on a regular basis. He was convicted of fraud, and much
to my surprise (I never expected to see any money returned),
given the choice of restitution or jail. He will be paying off
what must have seemed like easy money at the time, for a long time...
I'm wondering what legal steps you have taken. I assume you
have called the police at his last known location - and have
contacted the mail-fraud authorities if any part of this
transaction took place by mail... (the mail people caught the
one who got me).
