I missed the earlier posts, so this may be inappropriate...
Generally, I am not fond of filters in B&W, and I think
the losses in film speed off-set their advantages. If you
want to spring for just one, make it a 2-stop orange - it
will be noticeable in use (unlike yellow most of the time),
with less extreme effects (with the three stop loss) than
the red. Remember that, unless there are colors for the
filter to work with, there will be no effect. Also, camera
meters rarely meter correctly through color filters, so
check the (2-stop loss) orange filter on a neutral daylit
grey (like a side walk) against the no-filter exposure
(there should be a 2 stop difference - apply compensation
to the meter so that it shows 2 stops less light with
the orange filter than without).
