Older non-AI Nikon bodies will accept ALL Nikkor reflex lenses, and
will work properly with all - but "E", auto-focus, the latest (plastic
barrel) 50mm f1.8 AIS, and (I think) the 500mm f4 "P" lenses all require "stop-down" meter reading, since they do not have the meter coupling
prong on the lens for the older bodies. AI and AIS lenses have a ridge at the back of the aperture ring that engages a tab on the body for meter hook-up. (It makes sense to begin acquiring AI lenses if you
wish to stay with Nikon and eventually buy newer bodies, though there
are people who offer a lens conversion service for older lenses.)
