Your only concern is whether or not the lens is AI (automatic-indexing),
which AI, AI'd, AIS, E, AF, P, and S - series Nikkors are. There are two
quick give-aways: two aperture sequences on the aperture ring (though
AI'd lenses may not have this), and a "bumpy" rear-facing edge on the
aperture ring (non-AI lenses are smooth all-'round back there). The lens
rear must clear the small AI tab on the camera body when it is mounted
(AI lenses will). Functionally, non-AF lenses "limit" you (uh, you seem
to have noticed that newer features do not necessarily guarantee better
results...;-) to M and A exposure modes, without Matrix metering
(tsk, tsk! ;-).
Hope This Helps
