While the 24mm f2.8 AF and MF Nikkors are optically
the same, the looks and feel are quite different...
Pick up the two lenses - the MF has all metal parts,
well-machined, and well-finished (a joy to look at!);
the AF lens is mostly unpainted molded plastic parts
(with the mold marks still often visible). Tilt the
lenses - the MF feels firm and free of play; the AF
fronts often are loose, and move when tilted. Grab the
front of the AF - it feels like an MF lens that has
seen hard use for several years; the MF is tight,
without play. Try the focus ring - the MF feels
liquid-smooth; the AF has some play and subtle "gritty"
feel. Try the aperture ring - the MF feels smooth, and
the stops lock in place precisely; the AF often feels
like it's lubricated with oatmeal, and it may be hard
to select precise in-between-stop settings. I think the
well-made, more "precise"-feeling MF Nikkors are a
relative bargain - especially if bought used, in nice
condition... (they generally lose no value if taken
care of, which makes them an incredible deal! ;-).
