1) Ahah! You have noticed that the AF "focus confirmation" indicators
are none too useful, since they come on when the lens is clearly not
correctly focused. (You should see what they do with a 35mm f1.4 as
you focus distant objects - they lie egregiously!)
2) I guess it's called "manual focus" - the lens focuses on what you
want (without having to aim directly at something, or select an AF
patch) and stays focused on it without having to do anything else!
(It's amazing what old-time technology can do!)
It does sound from your post that you may be better off forgetting
about AF and staying with MF -- it works.
