The AF device isn't able to differentiate between subject
details and lens spill-light/diaphragm ghosts - they are
all "subjects" to the AF, and it will tend to focus on the
nearer, given a choice in its AF-sensor area, even if the
nearer "subject" is inside the lens... Shade the lens
better, use manual focus, or, possibly, zoom toward tele
a bit where the AF can't focus close.
