With some lenses, under some conditions, not very accurate, and
you can see the focusing errors on a sharp SLR VF screen, if you can
focus your eye sharply on it. BTW, Nikon has apparently learned the
trick long used by other camera mfgrs. to conceal the errors and
make people think they need AF: they put viewing screens in newer
Nikons that aren't as sharp as the ones in older bodies.
