--Manuals are available from Nikon (1-800-NIKONUS), but Nikon bodies are --(mostly) self-evident opperationally.
>There a three different program modes: P, Pd, and Ph
>What are the differences between the three modes?
--P = (standard) program, Pd = (dual) program, Ph = (high-speed)program
--Ph selects a high shutter speed in preference to a smaller aperture;
--Dd selects P or Ph, depending on focal-length of the lens used.

--It manually lights the light behind the display in the finder (which --automatically lights when light levels are low [I would prefer to
--have the light on whenever the meter is activated]).
>One more thing: often, when I try to take a shot, it will AF, and then >sit there, and not take the picture. Then it makes a funny squealing >sound, and not take the picture. Only if I let go and press the shutter >release agin will it fire the shutter. What is happening here? It >hasn't made me miss any critical shots yet, but I can imagine when it >will.
--It will seem to do peculiar things when not loaded (or improperly --loaded) with film. If it does what you described with properly loaded
--film, it needs repair. (Also, on single autofocus - not manual, or
--continuous focus - it will not fire unless focus is achieved, so if --you are just playing with the camera and pushing buttons, it may act
--as you describe above.)
--Hope this helps.
