Ah, but you didn't find my site... (Nikkor evaluation list,
under "I babble")! There are about to be 5 (!) different
Nikkor 80-200mm f2.8 zooms: the discontinued MF, the AF non-D,
the one-ring AF-D, the current AF-D with 2-rings and tripod
foot, and the soon-to-be-released "S" version. The first and
last are optically different from each other and different
from the middle three, which are optically the same... All
are first-rate (presumably... [the "S" is untried, but it is
a really fancy design optically...]), so my guess is that
the reported variations are accounted for by sample
variations...
