The E and constant-aperture AF 70-210's are the same, optically, and are
fine wide-open, as is the 80-200mm f4 (similar performance). The older
80-200mm f4.5's (various versions) are really excellent in the short end
of their range, but a bit below the later lenses at 200mm (still very
good, though). The 80-200mm f2.8's do perform better, though, in most
respects (though they are not compact or light). I am not fond of the
70-210 f4-5.6 AF, and have not tried the 80-200mm f4-5.6. You might
