The Nikkor 50mm f1.8 AF is an excellent lens (assuming a good sample)
in virtually every respect. It is fast (and quite good even wide-open),
sharp, distortion free, low in flare, flat-field, small, light, and
cheap - a REAL BARGAIN in lenses! And, yes, at mid to wide apertures,
especially in the corners, I would expect the 50mm Nikkor to outperform
the Sigma (or most any other) zoom...
