Why not try the "wideangle-telephoto" (with the aid of feet ;-), fast,
sharp, cheap Nikkor 50mm f1.8 - it has it all (great performance [including
no linear distortion], bright viewing image, good performance about three
stops ahead of most zooms, sturdy construction, and very low price), and
35mm is not very different from 50mm (and 80mm is not very different
from 50mm...;-).
