Well, I have had both sorts, an early one that was
T - E - R - R - I - B - L - E ! ! ! !
(A true pop-bottle bottom.)
YEE-UCK!!! PAH! BLEAH!
Then I found a late version, which was fully
up to middling-quality recent Nikkor cheap AF
mid-range zooms (quite useable, and even sharp
at optimum stops...). Surprises happen...
(Just found a really sharp-to-the-corners
36-72 f3.5 E-Series, and a 20mm f3.5 AIS that,
while poor at the edges at infinity-focus [as
expected], turned out to be quite sharp even at
f4 around 5-10' [quite useful for interiors,
and better at f4 than even the f2.8 version!].
Ah, well, more changes to be made to my Nikkor
