I have used three of these. From near-mid distances to near
infinity, the Nikkor 35mm f1.4 is remarkably sharp at f1.4 from
center to corner, and medium in contrast (below most Nikkors,
but not low in contrast. Images shot on transparency, B & W, and
color negative materials look good at f1.4 (the near subjects
at the bottom corners can look a bit softer, though the far
subjects at the top corners of the same frame look sharp).
The lens (not unexpectedly) improves with stopping down, and
by f4-5.6 is very high in quality. Quality is good wide-open,
and I never hesitate to use it this way in my commercial work
(there is no sign of light source "wings", flare, light fall-off,
or other defects that haunt lesser speed lenses) - it's a good
