Sorry, but the magazine is wrong. 35mm F2 MF Nikkor is an excellent
lens, contrasty and good (in a good sample - they are a little
variable) even wide open, but it is one of the very few Nikkors that
suffers from backlight problems, the far corners never sharpen up
even at F16, and the lens seriously vignettes (also rare for Nikkors)
until stopped down to about F4 (leaving the F1.4 about a whole stop
faster on film at F2 than the F2 at F2). The 35mm F1.4 Nikkor, while
a bit lower in contrast at wider apertures, manages to be sharp to
the corners at F1.4 (!), and even in illumination at wide apertures.
I use mine in commercial work wide open without hesitation, and have
taken many good photos under terrible light with it - it is my
money-maker lens. BTW, the F2 is a very early design, the only one
of its era still in the line - the floating element F1.4 is a
more modern design, and I think that shows in its performance.
Hope this helps.
