The 35-70 doesn't offer enough range for me to bother with its
shortcomings (and the two I've seen were not remarkably good...).
The 35-105 is slower, but has a more useful range. The 24-120 is
slower yet (at f3.5-5.6), but it is excellent (and very slightly
cheaper than the 35-70 f2.8). For speed and image quality, a
35mm f2 and 85mm f1.8 in AF, or 35mm f2 and 85mm f2 or 105mm f2.5
in MF, can be a nice combination...
