You may want to look at the 2X Macro Vivitar converter - its performance
is close to the Nikkor, it has a built-in variable extension tube for
macro, and it is reasonably inexpensive. Performance wide-open would not
be wonderful, but by f5.6 (f11 effective), it would be good, improving
to best at f11 or so (f22, alas, effective aperture...).
