I was not impressed with the 28-70 either (though it was decent, and
very uniform in performance characteristics (I prefer the 28-85....).
The earlier 35-105 was a quite variable quality lens (unusual for Nikon),
and it could be exceptionally good in a good sample (it is one of my
favorites in MF, but I have seen a bunch of poor ones). The AF D version
is a new design, and I have heard that it is excellent (and I trust it
has better sample consistency).
