It can be a very good lens (see:
www.David-Ruether-Photography.com/slemn.html).
I was surprised once while checking out
a Nikkor 28mm f1.4 lens. I shot a morning
backlight photo at f5.6 on a good 100-speed
slide film with this zoom at 28mm, and with
the Nikkor 28mm f1.4, 28mm f2.8 (AIS MF,
the "good" one...), and 28mm f4 PC lenses.
I expected the results to look best with
the 2.8, and maybe the 1.4, but was
surprised to find that this lowly zoom and
the PC lens (with its large, and potentially
brilliance-reducing image circle) had the
best "brilliance" and the best sharpness,
if only by a bit... The 28-70 is also very
good at its other FLs.
